Autotrader – What are the alternatives?

If you're looking for an alternative to Autotrader, webuyanycar offers a guaranteed sale with no listing fees, no waiting for a buyer, and no risk of the sale falling through. Other options include classified sites, online auctions, and dealer platforms, each with their own trade-offs around price, speed, and certainty.

Autotrader has been a leading UK car marketplace since the 1970s, moving online-only in 2013. It remains one of the largest, with over 400,000 listings, but that scale brings drawbacks for both buyers and sellers, including variable listing fees and time-consuming ad creation.

Unlike Autotrader, where you create a listing, pay a fee, and wait for a private buyer, webuyanycar buys your car directly. Get a free car valuation, book an appointment at any of our 550 branches, with no listing, no viewings, and no buyer negotiations.

Please note: Platform features, fees, and partner names referenced in this guide were correct at the time of publication and may change. Check current terms directly with the provider before making a decision.

How does Autotrader work?

Autotrader is primarily a classified advertising platform connecting buyers and sellers of new and used vehicles.

Buyers search listings using filters including:

  • Make, model, and price
  • Mileage and year of manufacture
  • Fuel type and CO2 emissions
  • Tax group
  • Each listing includes photos, vehicle descriptions, history information, and seller ratings for dealer listings.

When a buyer wants to view the car or arrange a test drive, they'll get in touch through Autotrader's number-masking system, so your real phone number stays private.

It also introduces buyers to finance through its partner Zuto and insurance quotes through MoneySuperMarket, paid on a commission basis, so these aren't impartial recommendations.

On the seller side, users can create, manage, and renew their own listings, with the option to pay extra to boost an advert higher in search results on Premium or Ultimate packages.

Alongside its paid listing service, Autotrader offers a second route for sellers through its partner, Dealer Auction. Sellers submit their vehicle details for free, receive the highest offer from a network of verified dealers, and can arrange free collection and same-day payment if they accept an offer.

How to sell your car on Autotrader

Creating an advert on Autotrader takes a few steps, from entering your car's details to managing enquiries once it's live.

To sell your car on Autotrader:

  • Enter your registration number and mileage. Autotrader will automatically fill in some basic details about your car, but the more you add yourself, the better.
  • Set your asking price. Use our free car valuation tool as a starting point and cross-reference with other tools before committing.
  • Write a description. Keep it thorough but concise, focus on your car's unique selling points, but don't gloss over any flaws, honesty helps avoid wasted enquiries later.
  • Upload photos. Up to 100 images are permitted across all packages, ideally high-res, well-lit, and from a range of angles. Autotrader advises that buyers expect to see at least 20; Premium and Ultimate packages also allow a YouTube video.

Manage enquiries through Autotrader's messaging system. Viewings, test drives, and payment are arranged privately between buyer and seller, so it's on you to verify the buyer's identity, supervise any test drives, and confirm payment has actually cleared before handing over the keys.

Autotrader does not handle any part of the transaction itself, and like any private sale, you may also encounter time-wasters, last-minute negotiations, or a buyer who simply doesn't show.

Make sure you have the right documents to sell your car ready, and check out our guides to selling your car privately and safe selling for further tips and guidance.

How much does it cost to advertise on Autotrader?

Unlike free car advertising websites, Autotrader does not offer any free listing options. Instead, they charge advertising fees depending on your car’s location, value and advertising duration.

The listing fee is only part of the cost, though. Here are two further expenses you might not have thought about before committing to a classified listing:

Depreciation while you wait

There's no guaranteed sale date with a classified listing, so the longer it takes to sell, the more value your car can lose. Some of that comes from ordinary factors, like the extra mileage you rack up while still driving it, and ongoing costs like tax, insurance, and servicing that continue whether it's sold or not; you can see a fuller breakdown of what affects your car's value here.

Timing adds another layer on top of that. This matters most for seasonal cars; dealer data shows convertibles can take over 80 days to sell in February, compared to just 33 days in summer and autumn.

Since dealers and private sellers are chasing the same buyers, that winter slowdown is likely to hit a private sale too. So, if you're listing a convertible in the wrong season, you could be watching its value slip away for weeks, on top of what you've already paid to list it.

A guaranteed sale with webuyanycar sidesteps this risk entirely: your final price is confirmed at your appointment, and locked in the instant you accept it, rather than left exposed to however long the car takes to sell.

The value of your own time

A Tempcover-commissioned survey of 1,700 UK private sellers found the average sale took 13.5 days from listing to completion, with sellers spending close to six hours in total photographing the car, writing the ad, responding to messages, and arranging viewings.

The same survey found that almost 40% of sellers accepted less than their asking price, settling for £908 less on average, often simply to avoid dragging the process out further.

Time, hassle, and settling for less rarely feature in fee tables, yet they represent tangible costs for many classified sellers.

How much is my car worth? Using the Autotrader valuation tool

To get a free estimate with Autotrader:

  • Visit the Autotrader website and enter your mileage and reg plate.
  • Confirm your car's details, then sign in or create a free account to view your results.
  • The tool returns a private sale value and a part-exchange estimate, both drawn from live market data updated daily.

It's worth knowing what goes into these figures. Autotrader combines data from several sources:

  • Over 500,000 live adverts
  • Prices from 3,500+ dealer websites
  • Car auction data
  • Prices from fleet and leasing companies

Auction and fleet data represent real transaction prices, but live adverts mostly reflect what other sellers are asking, which isn't always what a buyer will actually pay.

A same-day valuation is also a snapshot, not a forecast. Autotrader itself notes that some cars, like convertibles, become more popular in summer, and wider market conditions, like fuel prices or shifts in demand for petrol, diesel, or electric cars, can move used car values too.

Autotrader's valuation tool also has no way of knowing if your specific model happens to be in short supply at dealerships right now, a gap that could mean a car in genuine demand is worth more than the guide price suggests. None of this is reflected in the figure you're given on the day you check it.

Say you value your convertible in September, when demand is still high, so the price looks good. If it takes until December to sell, you've lost ground on several fronts: the seasonal boost has gone, the car's now two months older, and it's likely done more miles in the meantime, all of which chip away at the figure you started with.

The estimate assumes your car is in good condition for its age. It doesn't account for:

Car colour isn't reflected in the guide price either. Autotrader's own guidance notes that certain colours are more sought-after than others, so a desirable colour could push your actual value above the figure shown.

Put together, this means the figure might be reasonable on the day you get it but will likely become less accurate thereafter. Treat it as a starting point, not a fixed price.

Follow up with a detailed valuation for webuyanycar

Since a quote from webuyanycar's free car valuation tool is built from your car's actual details rather than a market average, it gives you a genuinely upfront figure, one you can act on immediately, rather than an estimate you then have to chase in the open market.

Since it's also built from live market data rather than a fixed guide price, it works in your favour when the market does too: if you're selling a convertible in summer, your quote reflects today's stronger demand, so you can act on it straight away rather than risk waiting until winter, when both demand and price are likely to have dropped.

Fuel type and registered colour are pulled automatically from your reg plate. The tool assumes good condition by default, but you can adjust our standard assumptions for your car across four broad areas:

  • Your car's history: Mileage, service history, and number of previous owners.
  • Value-adding extras: Tasteful alloy wheel upgrades, premium tyres, or retrofitted tech like a dash cam or parking sensors, all of which could push your value up.
  • Its condition: Bodywork, trim, tyres, and mechanical health, plus any dashboard warning lights or known issues.
  • Anything else worth flagging: Accident damage, outstanding finance, or missing paperwork like your V5C logbook.

None of these details are mandatory, and everything can be confirmed in person at your appointment should you choose to book one. However, providing as much detail as you can upfront will help ensure your online valuation is as accurate as possible.

You've already seen why Autotrader's figure can run high; it's partly built from other sellers' asking prices, not confirmed sales.

Set that against our own valuation, and for a well-kept car, the real gap is often smaller than the two numbers first suggest, because ours is built from your car specifically, not what other buyers are hoping to get for theirs, and it's a figure you can act on right away, rather than something you have to wait on.

The higher the value, the more security matters

The more your car is worth, the more there is to lose if something goes wrong with a private sale. If it's a prestige or desirable model you've taken real pride in, you want a straightforward, secure sale, not strangers on your driveway haggling over the price.

A guaranteed, secure sale with webuyanycar removes that risk entirely, whatever your car is worth. There's no doorstep negotiation, just one trusted, car buying service handling the sale from start to finish.

Higher-value cars also benefit from how our valuations work. The proportion of value lost to cosmetic damage tends to be smaller on higher-value vehicles than on cheaper ones, so if your valuable car does have some wear and tear, it's less likely to be marked down by a large percentage for it.

What are the alternatives to selling on Autotrader?

Selling with webuyanycar means a straightforward, professional process from valuation to payment. There are no listings to manage, no photos to take, no private viewings to arrange, and no risk of a buyer pulling out at the last minute.

A free valuation takes under 30 seconds, and that price is guaranteed for four days, protecting you from market changes while you decide and book your appointment.

It's a model built around certainty and efficiency rather than chasing the last few pounds of value, which is why it works just as well for a cherished prestige car as it does for a family car that's been along for every adventure, wearing every mile with pride.

A quick sale with webuyanycar also sidesteps the depreciation risk covered earlier: a same-day sale locks in today's value, rather than leaving it exposed to next month's market.

The buyer will make a final offer following an inspection at your chosen branch, with the entire process typically taking less than an hour from quote to sale.

Any outstanding finance is handled at the point of sale; we deal directly with your finance company, so you won't have to chase them yourself. If your car is worth more than your settlement figure, you keep the difference. Just bring an in-date settlement letter to your appointment.

Every option below can often exceed a dealership's part-exchange offer. What sets webuyanycar apart is getting there with a guaranteed sale, fixed appointment, and one familiar point of contact throughout; something worth having whatever your car is worth, but especially reassuring on a higher-value sale.

Taken together, this puts you in control: you choose when and where to sell, and the outcome is guaranteed.

Classified and marketplace platforms

Facebook Marketplace, eBay Motors, and Gumtree all carry vehicle listings, but seller types and costs differ. eBay Motors and Gumtree accept listings from both private sellers and dealers. Facebook Marketplace is private sellers only; dealer listings were discontinued in January 2023.

Listing is free on Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree. eBay Motors charges a listing fee plus a final value fee on completion. None of the three guarantee a completed sale.

Dealer aggregator platforms

Motorway and Carwow work in a similar way to Autotrader or a classified ad; you're still trying to attract a buyer rather than getting a guaranteed sale. The difference is you're usually meeting with an experienced dealer rather than a member of the public, so expect more determined negotiation at inspection than a private buyer might offer.

The listing process isn't as quick as it first sounds, either. Motorway asks for 16 separate photos covering the exterior, interior, wheels, and tyre treads, plus any imperfections, and Carwow's own guidance puts the full timeframe, from listing to completed sale, at 7 to 10 days.

Once bids start coming in, there's also back-and-forth to manage yourself. The same Tempcover survey of private and classified car sellers found that 39% who accepted a lower offer than they wanted did so simply to avoid further hassle: exactly the kind of friction that doesn't disappear just because the offers are arriving through a platform rather than a classified ad. A few things worth knowing before you use either:

  • You'll still need to take and upload photos before your listing goes live.
  • A winning bid isn't a guaranteed sale. Most dealers require a physical inspection, usually at your home, and can revise their offer or walk away at that point.
  • There's no fixed completion date until a dealer actually collects the car.

From here, the process can slow down and become less certain. You're handed off to a third-party dealer whose buying process can vary from one to the next, and none of it is settled until they do. Without a fixed appointment, that can leave you back at square one, no closer to a sale than if you'd gone the classified route to begin with.

Buying a car on Autotrader and the alternatives

Autotrader is the UK's largest online destinations for second-hand car buyers. Filters cover make, model, price, mileage, fuel type, engine size, CO2 emissions, road tax rate, and distance from a postcode.

Each listing includes photos, specs, vehicle history, and seller ratings for dealer listings. Finance options including hire purchase (HP), conditional sale (CS), and personal contract purchase (PCP) are available alongside a monthly payment calculator.

For buyers looking beyond Autotrader:

Cinch is an online car retailer offering thousands of used cars to a consistent standard, with a retailer warranty, home delivery, part exchange, and integrated finance options. This makes it a practical choice for buyers who want the reassurance of a trade purchase without visiting a forecourt.

eBay Motors is an established auction and classified platform covering cars, motorcycles, scooters, vans, motorhomes, boats, and more. The auction format can offer competitive pricing, though private purchases carry standard risks. Check history and documentation carefully before proceeding.

PistonHeads is aimed at performance and premium car buyers, with an active enthusiast community and an automated bidding system, making it particularly useful for buyers with a specific vehicle in mind.

Please note: Auction purchases carry a non-refundable buyer's fee of 6% plus VAT, with a minimum of £695 plus VAT, charged automatically to your payment card upon winning a bid.

Facebook Marketplace lists cars from local private sellers and can offer competitive prices. However, you should always verify a vehicle's history and documentation before committing. If a price looks significantly below market value without explanation, that warrants investigation.

Frequently Asked Questions

The tool returns a market estimate based on current listing data, but it assumes good condition and does not account for your specific car's service history, damage, or mileage position.

For a figure that reflects your car's actual condition, a webuyanycar valuation takes those inputs directly, giving you a more accurate starting point that's held for 4 days while your final offer is confirmed at inspection.

It's a useful starting point, but "accurate" depends on what you're measuring it against. Autotrader's tool draws on live market data and returns both a private sale value and a part-exchange estimate, but by its own stated methodology, part of that figure is drawn from advertised asking prices for similar cars, not confirmed sale prices.

The figure is therefore best read as a market estimate of asking prices for a typical example of your car, rather than a guaranteed figure of what you'll achieve.

Conversely, webuyanycar's free car valuation tool lets you update the default condition assumptions with details specific to your car, such as remaining MOT cover and aftermarket alloys, which can drive quotes up or down, and gives you a more tailored view of your car's value.

For classified listings, no. Fees vary by location and car value:

  • Great Britain: Listings are priced on a sliding scale based on the car's value, starting from £9.95 for a basic two-week listing for a car valued up to £999, rising to £99.95 for an 'until sold' listing for a car valued over £24,995.
  • Northern Ireland: A single flat-rate package is available at £4.95 for eight weeks, regardless of car value.

However, Autotrader's auction route, run through its partner Dealer Auction, is free to use for private sellers across Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

It varies. Some cars sell within days; others take considerably longer. There is no guaranteed timeline on a classified listing, and seasonal demand can extend this further for certain vehicle types.

A convertible listed in winter, for example, may take substantially longer to sell than the same car listed in summer.
