Scrapping your car FAQs

The simplest option is to enter your reg and mileage into our free car valuation tool to get a fast quote. From here, you can sell your 'scrap' car at any webuyanycar branch.

You can also contact local scrapyards directly to negotiate a price based on the current market value of scrap metal, or list the vehicle on online platforms or auction sites to reach private buyers. (Please note: Category A vehicles cannot be sold privately.)

Some local dealers may also offer a trade-in value, though this is often lower for non-running or damaged vehicles.

As of March 2026, the average scrap car price in the UK is around £250.

The amount you'll get for scrapping your car depends on a few key factors, including its weight, current scrap metal prices, and whether any parts can be reused or resold.

That said, scrapyards typically offer the lowest payouts compared to other ways of selling your car.

You could also make more money by removing and selling valuable parts separately, but this requires time, effort, and mechanical skill - and it may take longer to sell everything.

If your car is still in reasonable condition, you could get more by selling it to a car buying service like webuyanycar instead of scrapping it. In many cases, this can result in a higher price - and we can even buy Category A cars, potentially beating your scrap quote.

You might consider scrapping your car if it's old, damaged, or no longer roadworthy. Scrapping lets you get a fair price quickly, free up space, and ensure your vehicle is disposed of safely and legally.

In England and Wales, it's illegal to be paid in physical currency for a scrap vehicle. Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, all payments must be made via traceable methods such as bank transfer or cheque.

Whilst you cannot 'scrap' your car in exchange for physical cash with webuyanycar, we can pay you via electronic bank transfer.

Documents and accessories
Identification
  • Photographic proof of ID (e.g. driving licence or passport).
  • Proof of address from the last 9 months (e.g. utility bill, council tax bill or bank statement).

If the address on your driving licence matches your V5, proof of address is not required. If you use a passport as your proof of ID, proof of address is still required.

Financial details
  • Your bank details (so webuyanycar can set up the payment).
  • If your car has outstanding finance, an in-date letter from the car finance company confirming the settlement amount.

Additional documentation may be required if you are selling on behalf of others, see the FAQ 'Can I sell a car on behalf of a friend, family member or company?', 'Can I sell a car when the owner has passed away?'.

If you're still unsure and want to learn more, we've created a guide for documents you need to scrap your car.

With our standard payment method, you’ll receive payment within four working days. However, if you select our Immediate Payment option, you can get paid within 15 minutes (fees apply).

  • Next working day payment: £24.75.
  • Immediate Payment (typically within 15 minutes): £29.75.

If we buy your car for under £500, you can select our next working day or Immediate Payment option at no extra cost.

For more details on our eligibility criteria, read our terms and conditions.

Scrapping your car at a scrapyard is usually free of charge and you'll be paid the vehicle's scrap value.

However, some scrapyards will charge you a fee if any essential parts have been removed from the car. This processing fee will be deducted from your payment.

Yes, you can scrap a car that isn't in your name, but only if you're authorised to do so by the owner.

You'll need to provide your own photo ID and proof of address, as scrap dealers are legally required to verify the identity of the person supplying the vehicle.

You may also be asked for additional documents, depending on the situation, such as:

  • The V5C logbook (if available).
  • Proof of the owner's permission (for example, a signed note or confirmation).
  • In some cases, a copy of the owner's ID.

Requirements can vary between scrapyards, so it's best to check in advance.

Scrapping your car does not automatically cancel your insurance, so you'll need to contact your insurer to cancel or update your policy.

Depending on your insurer and how much cover is left on your policy, you may be entitled to a partial refund.

However, cancellation fees and non-refundable charges often apply, so a refund is not guaranteed, especially if you pay monthly rather than annually.
